Weekly Homework

Wednesday 16th September 2020

Thank you for all of the lovely photos of home learning! Fantastic work Year 1!

This week in Maths we have been measuring everything in standard and non-standard units. We have measured items using bricks, paperclips, and cubes – we have started learning how to use a ruler. Can you choose 3 items from around your house to measure? You can measure them using any items that are the same size, e.g. Lego bricks or building blocks or paperclips, etc. On a piece of paper, record the items sizes. Discuss - Which item was the largest? How do you know? Which was the smallest? How many more paperclips was ‘item x’ than ‘item y’?

In English we have been reading The Gingerbread Man and learning about adjectives. We have used simple adjectives to describe some characters.

Discuss what an adjective is – remind them it is a describing word. Can you have a go at writing some adjectives to describe the Gingerbread man? Can you come up with a simple sentence about the Gingerbread man? E.g. The cheeky Gingerbread man ran fast.Remember say the sentence twice before you begin to write it. Remember capital letters and full stops!

Please can you continue to practise counting at home – or anywhere and everywhere!

As we are not sending homework books home due to COVID-19, please can you take photos and/or videos of your child engaging in homework tasks and email them to me at

If you have any questions, please feel free to email me or speak to any of the Year 1 team at drop off or pick up.

Thank you

Mrs Grainger smiley
