Year 1

                                                                                Happy New Year!

Merry Christmas!

What a wonderful term it has been! The children have thoroughly enjoyed and embraced their learning this term and we are so proud of them.

Year 1, you are a fantastic bunch of children and I have loved being part of your school journey. I will truly miss teaching you. I will be just across the corridor and will keep checking in on you. You will love having Miss Jeynes as your new teacher, she is lovely. Be your amazing selves and I am sure she will enjoy teaching you as much I have.

Thank you for all the beautiful cards and gifts we have received. We are very grateful for your generosity.

I hope you all have a wonderful (Covid-free) break. If you are celebrating Christmas, I hope you have a lovely day with your loved ones. If you are not celebrating, I hope you have an enjoyable rest.

Wishing all of Year 1 and their families the Happiest of New Years! Let’s hope 2021 is a little less dramatic and full of a lot more hugs!

If you need anything at all over the Christmas period, please do not hesitate to contact me (I will be checking my emails every couple of days).

Lots of love,

Mrs Grainger smiley

Gallery

Take a look at our Gallery!

The children enjoyed a lovely Christmas lunch today, with crackers and Christmas music.

They said it was “THE BEST DAY EVER!” laugh

Nativity

The boys and girls have started rehearsing our nativity called 'The Sleepy Stargazer'. Year 1 have three songs to learn. Attached below you will find the song lyrics and you can click on the links to navigate to the songs. All children must practise these so the words can be heard clearly on the recording. We cannot rely on Reception and Year 2 this year as they are learning different songs for our performance.

The Great Fire of London

This afternoon we watched and played a game on the Great Fire of London. The children thoroughly enjoyed and wanted to continue playing the game at home. Below is the link to the game. Enjoy!

Reading at home and Spellings

Just a reminder that the children will come home with two new books each Monday. These books will then be handed back in on Friday, where we will change them and quarantine them over the weekend. There are additional books on the Oxford Owls website - you can choose your child's colour reading level and find lots of new books to read online.

Log ins for Purple Mash have now been stuck into the back of your child's reading record. No homework has been set on Purple Mash as of yet but your child is more than welcome to explore the fun activities on the website.

I know many of you are eager to know your child's spelling score so we have decided to put their scores in their Reading Records. You will be able to view your child's score and any words they stumbled on, on the following Monday when Reading Records are sent home.

Thank you

Our First Week

Well that's week 1 of Year 1 done! You have all been amazing and settled into our new routines well.

We have had a very busy first week - quite possibly the busiest I have ever had! The children have enjoyed using our Maths and English resources, as well as discovering our areas in continuous provision. This afternoon we had a go at exploring drawing techniques in Art and had our first ever virtual assembly!

Please find some new photos of our first week in the Gallery section of our class page.

I have uploaded the class newsletter, which was sent out on Thursday - please take the time to have a read through it. The Yearly Overview for Year 1 has also been uploaded, this shows the topics we will be teaching throughout the year.

I hope you all have a lovely weekend.

Reception to Year 1 Transition Booklet and For my Teacher Booklet

Good Luck Year 1!

To all of Year 1 and your families,

We have reached the end of a very strange school year!  Firstly, I would like to say a huge well done to you all for all your hard work during Lockdown. You have all aimed higher and showed us all what 'Harris Standard' truly means, I couldn’t be prouder!

I will see you all in September, when you start Year 2. You will all be amazing and I am sure Miss Rigby will be as proud as myself and Miss Sanders. Miss Rigby has added a transition booklet for you all onto her class page and a copy of it will be sent out via Parent Mail.

I hope you all have a wonderful summer.

Remember to continue to make good choices, aim higher and have fun!

Week beginning 13.7.20

Good morning,

Welcome to our final week of home learning! What a fantastic job you have all been doing.

Our final day in school is Monday 20th July, I will not set any work for that day as we will not be doing any work in school.

Please see below for our learning focus this week.

In English we will be focusing on:

  • 20-minute Phonics sessions every day – use interactive games (Phonics play) to aid home sessions.
  • Say the sentence, hold the sentence, write the sentence.
  • Writing simple sentences – focusing on using phonetic knowledge for spelling any unknown words, capital letters, full stops, and finger spaces.
  • Try extending sentences using ‘and’, try using some adjectives.
  • Do you know how to use an exclamation mark and a question mark? Have a go!
  • Handwriting

In Maths we will be focusing on:

Multiplication and Division

  • This week we will be recapping the Multiplication and Division week set on Monday 15th June. All the learning objectives and resources can still be found on the ‘Maths’ page.
  • Please work through these learning objectives again.
  • Number formation is a strong focus this week too.

Reading and Phonics

  • Continue to use interactive Phonics games to support learning.
  • Try to read every day with your child. Remember to use Oxford Owls, it is a great resource!

Topic

We will be making our own playdough in school this week. Can you have a go at making playdough?

https://www.bbcgoodfood.com/howto/guide/playdough-recipe

I hope you all have a lovely final week of home learning. It has been an absolute pleasure setting work for you all and receiving your superb work! Miss Rigby is very excited to teach you all in September.

If you have an questions or queries, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Week beginning 6.7.20

Good morning,

I hope you all had a lovely weekend.

We have a new website. I hope you are all managing to navigate it, it is very user-friendly.

Please see below for the learning objectives we will be covering this week. I will attach some example Maths questions below.

In English we will be focusing on:

  • 20-minute Phonics sessions every day – use interactive games (Phonics play) to aid home sessions.

Reading and Phonics:

  • Continue to use interactive Phonics games to support learning.
  • Try to read every day with your child. Remember to use Oxford Owls, it is a great resource!

In Maths we will be focusing on:

Subtraction (the difference between).

  • Subtract one-digit and two-digit numbers to 20 using ‘difference’ as finding how many more to make a number. This should be supported with pictures and/or concrete objects.
  • Solve problems involving how many more to make a number.
  • Ask and answer simple questions by counting the number of objects in a category.
  • Ask and answer questions by comparing categorical data (block graphs).
  • We will continue to work on correct number formation.

Topic:

We have been focusing on gymnastics in P.E. Can you create your own routine?

Don’t forget to record your dance video! It can be recorded with sound. Try to send it in as soon as you can.

I would still love to see photos of any home learning. If you have any questions or need any support, please do not hesitate to contact me.

I hope you all have a lovely week.

I hope you all had a lovely weekend.

You will find the overview for this week attached above. The Phonics and English sections are very similar to last week and we will be continuing to focus on those basic writing, reading and handwriting skills.

Continue to enjoy phonics games and read as much as possible. Remember Oxford Owls is a great tool.

I would still love to see photos of any home learning. If you have any questions or need any support, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Year 1 and 2 Dance

Hi everyone,

Miss Sumner has created a short dance video for the children in each class to learn. (below)

y1and2

This is "y1and2" by V on Vimeo, the home for high quality videos and the people who love them.

Practise the dance at home. If you can, film yourself performing the dance and email the video to your teacher.

Mr Cooper will then put the video clips together to create a school dance video.

If we all learn the dance, we can perform a whole school dance performance when we are all back to school in September (hopefully).

Have fun!

Mr Groom

Good morning,

I hope you are all well.

Today we have some Year 1 children returning to school and some Year 1 children will continue to stay at home.

Over the next four weeks, I will post a weekly overview of our focuses in school for the children who are still at home. These overviews will be attached above each ‘Good morning’ message, weekly. Each week I will include the learning objectives for Maths and English. Our main focus in school will be phonics and basic Maths skills (place value, simple addition, simple subtraction).

I would encourage lots of phonics games, read, read, read (try to use Oxford Owls as much as you can) and simple Maths problems.

If you have any questions or need any support, please do not hesitate to contact me.

I hope you all have a lovely week.

Mrs Grainger :-)

Monday 18th May 2020

Good morning,

Welcome to another wonderful week of home learning. I hope you all had a lovely, restful weekend. Thank you to everyone who sent in photos of their child's work and videos of their poem – they were all fantastic!

We are nearly there with uploading the photos and videos, my laptop seems to struggle with this request. I will be in school all this week and we will hopefully resolve this issue, so I can upload some of your fantastic work. If you can, please keep sending your photos through – they are a pleasure to see.

Parents, I would like to take the time to thank each and every one of you for all the hard work you are putting in with your child. I know home learning is not easy, especially if you are also working from home or have other children to support/occupy! I feel your pain! But, I have been overwhelmed by the amount of you sending in photos of fabulous work, thank you. If you are struggling to engage your child, please do not worry and please feel free to email me, I am always here to offer support. Also do not feel you only have to email in photos of children’s work, if your child has done anything they/you are proud of, I would love to hear about it.

As always, you will continue to find this week’s work under the following headings:

Phonics                Maths                    English                    Topic

I hope you al have a lovely Week 4 of Summer term 1.

Please do not hesitate to contact me if you need anything.

Mrs Grainger 😊

Miss Rigby has informed us that the Rising Stars website is offering a 90 day free trial. There are hundreds of books available for the children to access and read.

I hope you find this useful. Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions or queries.

Mrs Grainger

s.grainger@harris.lancs.sch.uk

Above I have attached another book I have been sent. This book about coronavirus and is aimed at children.

Hopefully it will help with understanding what coronavirus is and how we can help to stop it spreading.

Please do not feel you have to read these books to your child, they are there as a tool if you need them.

Mrs Grainger :-)

Above I have attached a copy of a book I have been sent. It is aimed at young children and is focused on sharing any worries they may have.

Please use this book if you wish. I hope it helps any of the children, who may be struggling with any worries.

Mrs Grainger :-)

Photos of Home Learning

Good morning,

When sending through photos of work, please can you try to send it as the smallest file possible. I can upload smaller file sized photos but it will not allow me to upload the larger files.

Thank you.

Happy Friday Everyone!

I am sure you will all join me in sending huge congratulations to Miss Sanders and her family on the birth of Baby Cookson! He is gorgeous! We wish you all the best as you settle in with your newest member. Hopefully it will not be too long before we can meet baby Cookson and give Miss Sanders a big hug!

Another week of excellent work completed! Thank you for all the photos of work. Apologies for not uploading any photos as of yet, my laptop keeps having a wobble everytime I try. I am going to get Mr Grainger on the case today and hopefully I will be able to upload some photos over the weekend.

Next week is a holiday week for Year 1, so no work will be posted on our class page. We would usually have a holiday week every three weeks, but myself and Miss Sanders switched our previous holiday week round so she could have a week off before her due date. Year 1's next holiday week will be week commencing 01/06/20.

I hope you have a lovely weekend and a super week off. Remember to be continue to be superstars for your parents!

Good afternoon,

I hope you have all enjoyed the lovely weather this week. Thank you to those of you who have sent over work (see below).

I hope you all have a lovely Easter weekend and have a relaxing week off next week.

I am now starting my maternity leave, so as of today I will be officially handing over to Mrs Grainger.

As soon as I have had the baby I will post a picture on here for you all to see.

Thank you for being a wonderful class - I miss you all dearly.

Keep up the hard work and continue to behave at home for your parents. Stay safe and well.

From

Miss Sanders

Thank you to Joshua E for completing this week's ICT: 'The Wrong Sandwich' (see attached)

Thank you to Lydia for sending me a picture of your fantastic 'Giraffe' poster.

Thank you to Louis for sharing some of the work you have been doing and for sharing your special evening. On Tuesday Louis and his family celebrated the Memorial of Jesus’ death. As Jehovah's Witnesses they go by the Roman calendar which would of been used in Jesus' time to pin point the right date.

As they were unable to meet as a congregation they shared in the celebration by using Zoom. There were 131 in total attendance. One of the photographs shows Louis making the memorial bread.

Joshua E has also been been on a nature walk collecting ‘treasure’, sent letters and Easter cards to his friends and has made an Easter bonnet. He has also written about penguins and got all his spellings correct.

If anybody else has any photographs or work that you have completed this week, please send them to me and I will add them to this page.

Thanks

Miss Sanders

Friday 3rd April 2020

Good evening,

We've come to the end of another week of home learning. I hope you have all had a lovely week and are ready for a work free weekend - you certainly all deserve a break.

I just wanted to take the opportunity to update you all on a few matters....

According to the information Mrs Gregory sent you at the start of the week, next week should be Year 1’s holiday week. However Mrs Grainger and I have decided that we will still upload a small amount of work and have the following week as our holiday (as that week will be much closer to my due date!!)
The work we will upload next week will be entirely optional as we understand the children are ready for a break, especially after the upheaval of the last two weeks. However I’m sure some of you will welcome the work as a way of keeping your children amused while there is very little else to do. The work is also going to support the school staff who will be teaching any children in Year 1 who have a keyworker as a parent and therefore will still be attending school. You will continue to find the work under the following headings:

Phonics                Maths                    English                    Topic

The whole week has already been added so you will have to scroll down to find Monday's work and then work your way back up to the top as the week goes on.

From Monday 20th April Mrs Grainger will take over from myself and will continue to put regular work on our class page. Next week is our transition week so the two of us will be submitting the work as a trial run for Mrs Grainger. Any issues or questions can still be emailed to myself, however I will be adding Mrs Grainger’s email to this message too so it would be nice if you could include her as well.

I hope you are all managing to stay safe and well and your children are coping with completing their learning from home.

Enjoy your weekend.

Take care

Miss Sanders                                          Mrs Grainger

It appears that there maybe a couple of steps missing from the bird algorithm. We'll not worry about this though as the work that a lot of you have already submitted looks fab. I will display your work on here tomorrow.

Thanks

Thursday 2nd April 2020

Good morning,

We have another birthday today!!

Today is the turn of Will's. We all wish you a huge

HAPPY BIRTHDAY and hope you have a lovely day.

Reading

Good evening,

RWI - update

At our school we follow Read, Write Inc Phonics and they have created extra support for pupils at home during school closures.

You will need to email me individually for our class log in.

Across the top click on the pink tab 'My Class Login'

Use the login and password I have emailed you.

Your child should then have access to E-books, Read Write Inc Phonics and Parent resources.

You will find resources, videos, activities and e-books for all the RWI scheme. Take a look because what they have published is really valuable.

Read the information and if you would like to know which books your child has been reading in class then you can email me and I will let you know.

Epic Reading - update

At the end of last week I registered the class on this site.

Click on the link which will direct you to the Log in page. Select 'Students and Educators'. Enter our class code nga5534. Children should then find their name to access their own area and books. Across the top you can select 'Lexile' and choose books 0-250 (easy reading books) or 200-400 (age appropriate reading books). This site gives the children access to hundreds of fiction and non-fiction books that they can read or listen to. Please contact me if you have any problems.

You can also email me your preferred email address which I can add to your child's account. This will allow further FREE access to books until 30th June 2020.

Many thanks

Miss Sanders

Tuesday 31st March 2020

Today is the turn of Junayd's. We all wish you a huge

I have attached a document with some advise to follow. We hope this helps. If you are still experiencing problems please let me know via email and I will ask Mr Cooper for further support.

Kind regards

Miss Sanders

Your Work

Good afternoon,

Here are a few photographs of the work some of you have done...

Omar having fun in his garden.

Joshua E completed an obstacle course (video to follow), made a tiger hand puppet and completed his ICT lego model lesson.

Good morning,

I have signed the class up on Epic Books site.

Good morning,

Your first week of home learning is nearly complete. I hope you have all enjoyed yourself and managed to spend time enjoying the sunshine.

You will be pleased to know that I won't be setting any homework for the weekend. If you are looking for some ideas to keep you busy this weekend, then I have suggested some below...

  • Complete any work from this week
  • Practise your spellings
  • Play Hit the Button
  • Look at the attached Activities/Websites list for more ideas
  • Read a book

Have a great day and a lovely weekend

I have also added a suggested timetable for you to follow with your child to help them get the most out of their home-schooling experience. The timetable is only a guide/suggestion and can be adapted/amended to suit you and your family (word document to follow).

I have also added some ideas/links to activities that will keep your child learning but hopefully make it fun and exciting for them at the same time (word document to follow).

Please try and include reading as a daily activity.

This link will take you to a library of hundreds of free books that your child can read on a tablet or other mobile device. You do have to register but it is free.

If you have any questions at all, please feel free to email me throughout the day and I will do my best to respond as quickly as I can.

After Easter Mrs Grainger will continue to set work on this page.

Kind regards,

Tuesday 17th March 2020

It's with great sadness that I had to say goodbye to you all today and I really wish it hadn't been so sudden. I wish you all the best at this difficult time and can't wait to come in and see you all once my baby has been born.

Thank you children (and parents) for being so lovely. I have thoroughly enjoyed teaching you all and will miss you dearly. I'm so proud of the progress that each and every one of you has made and I know you will continue to do so under the care and guidance of Mrs Grainger. Remember to continue to be Harris Standard in everything you do and 'aim high' at all times.

Take care

From Miss Sanders

Police Visit

Wednesday 11th March 2020

Today a very excited Year One class received a visit from the police. The children enjoyed listening to the important role/line of work police officers play in the community. The children asked lots of interesting questions and enjoyed trying out the different parts of the uniform. They especially enjoyed looking in and around the police van.

We would like to say a special thank you to Jacob Nellany's mum for arranging the visit and George Robert's mum who attended the visit too.

Thank you also to PCSO Suzie Lovick who led the visit with the support of her colleague PC Paul Geldard.

Maths - Fractions

Monday 9th March 2020

Today we started a unit on Fractions. We began by discussing what a fraction is...

"Part of a whole"

We then looked at halves and what a half is...

One of two equal parts of a whole – ½

We talked about how we can find half of different items...

We found half of a bag of oranges by sharing them between two hoops.

We found half of a glass of water by sharing it between a glass of the same size.

We found half of the number 22 using the Base 10 equipment.

We found half of a piece of paper by folding it.

World Book Day

Friday 6th March 2020

Today we dressed up as a character from a book. We wrote about the characters and read lots of stories.

World Book Day

Thursday 5th March 2020

Today Year One and Year Five came together to share stories. The Year Five children read beautifully to the Year One children. All the children had a lovely morning reading together.

Art - Colours

Wednesday 26th February 2020

Today we learnt about the three primary colours (yellow, red and blue) and began to explore colour mixing. By the end of the lesson the children were able to name the three primary colours and were able to mix primary colours to make various secondary colours, for example, mixing red and yellow to make orange. The children created their own colour wheel and practised using a paintbrush with control and accuracy.

Harris Museum

Tuesday 25th February 2020

Today we went on our trip to the Harris Museum with Reception. The children all had a fabulous day and enjoyed exploring the different rooms and artefacts on display. They also enjoyed looking at the artwork and learning about sculptures.

Year One would also like to say a special thank you to Miss Gavell for helping us on our trip.

See the Art and Design Page on the 'Curriculum' section of this website, for photographs...
