PSHE & RSE

PSHE at Harris

Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE) is a core element of life at Harris Primary School, supporting our pupils in becoming healthy, independent and responsible members of society. We encourage children to build their self-worth by taking an active, positive role within the school and the wider community. To prepare them for the future, it is essential that they gain the knowledge and skills needed to make informed decisions and grow into confident, independent citizens.

My Happy Mind is a mental health and well-being programme to support children in learning habits to support their own mental health. It does also cover all the mandatory objectives from the DfE Relationships Education Curriculum and also around 75% of the PSHE objectives. The additional PSHE objectives are covered by the SCARF sessions. Our whole school curriculum overview is the documents below.

As a whole school program grounded in science and dedicated to building positive mental wellbeing, My Happy Mind helps children understand how their brains work and creates a culture that helps to build children's resilience, confidence, and self-esteem. My Happy Mind also teaches

the children how to self-regulate and manage their emotions in stressful times, allowing them to be their very best selves!

My Happy Mind is taught across the whole school in weekly sessions, and consists of 5 units:

Meet Your Brain: Understanding how your brain works and how to ensure we look after it so that we can manage our emotions and be at

our best. Growth mindset is a key part of this too.

Celebrate: Understanding your unique character strengths and learning to celebrate them. This is a fantastic module for building self

esteem.

Appreciate: Understanding why gratitude matters and how you can develop gratitude as a habit. Gratitude is key to well-being and

resilience and we're all about making it a habit!

Relate: Understanding why positive relationships matter and how to build them. We're focussed on the building blocks of good relationships

and friendships.

Engage: Understanding how to set meaningful goals that matter and how to keep resilient in times of challenge. This module is all about

building self-esteem and resilience too.

SCARF: Safety, Caring, Achievement, Resilience, Friendship, is a PSHE scheme designed to develop pupils’ essential life skills and knowledge. The SCARF lessons are delivered alongside My Happy Mind for a comprehensive PSHE curriculum. This covers emotional well-being, healthy lifestyles, relationships, and safety; uses discussions, role-play, and interactive activities to support learning; helps pupils navigate social situations, make informed choices, and understand physical and mental health; supports teachers in creating a safe, inclusive classroom environment and builds pupils’ confidence, resilience, and sense of responsibility.

Relationships Education

Relationships Education is a compulsory part of the Primary curriculum. At Harris, our goal is to help pupils grow into happy, healthy and safe individuals. We aim to equip all children with the knowledge and skills needed to build positive, supportive relationships throughout their childhood and into adulthood.

Relationships Education begins in the EYFS, where children learn about their relationships with family and friends and how to show kindness and respect.

In KS1, pupils are taught to value healthy friendships. We encourage pupils to appreciate and respect others, including those who may be different from themselves.

We believe that working in partnership with parents is essential. Parents are welcome to speak with their child’s class teacher or the Headteacher about any aspect of our Relationships Education curriculum.

In Year 5 & 6, pupils are guided in understanding the physical and emotional changes associated with puberty, helping them feel prepared and confident as they grow.
